UK leading the world in e-commerce- what are you doing about it?

‘UK world leader in internet shopping’  ‘UK e-commerce spending increases 10% in February’  ‘10% of our GDP is now spent online’  ‘UK m-commerce expected to be worth £2.5bn by 2016’

On March 19th the BBC headlined a report that the UK was the world leader in internet shopping.  Was this misleading?  Did it refer to the fact that we are all just mad and still spending money we don’t have?  What was really behind the story and what is really going on within the world of e-commerce?

Your website should now be the central cog of your business, it positions your message and values to the world, it drives new business enquiries, it endorses what you do, it sets you apart from your competitors and at times it transacts with your customers.

How much importance are you giving to your overall online strategy?

A good website fulfils the roles of a marketing manager, sales representative, customer service agent, administrator and even finance director, not to mention being your high street presence on potentially every high street in the world!

Look at the headline again, all the evidence is pointing to a massive swing in user behaviour to online transaction and especially mobile transaction and by transaction I mean anything that brings a customer into contact with a supplier, so don’t think that just because you don’t sell products online that this does not apply to your business.

So, back to the question… are you giving enough resource to the most important asset in your business to ensure that you are in a healthy position to capitalise on the growth of this still emerging global economy?

Check list:

  • Does your site fully reflect your key messages?
  • Is it usable, user friendly?
  • Is your site responsive to mobile usage?
  • Does it pass the 8 second rule?
  • Is it visible to your target market?
  • Is it contributing to your bottom line?
  • Do you have a future e-strategy?
