The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names (ICANN)thinks the new set of names will change the way way business is done online as the public will be able to find content that is specific to each extension.

As well as this around 1,400 extensions are believed to be coming online in the the next few years.

ICANN has also invited businesses to apply for names they would like to be made available. So far almost two thousand new names have been applied for, these include .porn, .ninja and .Ferrari. The BBC will be applying for .bbc and others corporations will be following in their footsteps to secure their online identity.

As well as corporate and and brand names there will be around 700 generic names made available such as .shop, .hotel, .site etc.

The obvious downside to these generic top level domains being released is the expense. It’s going to cost quite a lot, maybe thousands of pounds for the top companies to make sure their brands are secured.

The latest figures released put the price of these domain names at anything from 25 USD to 100,000 USD.

From a normal, average website businesses perspective it doesn’t seem like it will make a huge difference. You wont be penalised by the search engines nor are you likely to gain advantage.

It’s purely a branding exercise at the moment but that may change. Google is always changing the way their engines submit results to the public and if these names are to give clarity then it wont take to long before results will be given preference if they have a relevant domain name extension.
